Manufacture and features of Nike prescription glasses

Nikon has been a world leader in research and optical products for nearly 100 years. The line of  Nike prescription glasses are among the most technically advanced. The company is continuously researching and improving its eyeglass products.

Novel Radiation Protection Product:

Among its wide inventory of products, Nike produces Nike Lava eyeglasses that provide significant protection against radiation. These eyeglasses come with plano lenses when the eyeglasses are used for their radiation protection. Designed for physicians and clinical technicians, they also come with single vision and bifocal lenses. The glasses incorporate lightweight bilayer barium bisulfate-bismuth oxide composite thyroid collars for superior radiation protection. Studies have called this “a novel radiation attenuation product.”

Large scale research was carried out in 2012 by Uthoft, et.al. at the Baptist Cardiac and Vascular Institute in Miami, Florida and the Department of Angiology, University Hospital, Basel, Switzerland. A study of 144 fluoroscopy-guided interventions compared the Nikon glasses with standard .5 mm lead equivalent protection glasses. The Nikon glasses were nearly half as heavy as the lead protections, were significantly higher on comfort scores and provided significantly better radiation protection than the standard lead .5 mm lead collars.

Nikon has innovations in many of its lens products. Nikon progressive lenses allow multiple focal points for gradual increase in lens correction from top to bottom. Optimal focus for various distances is located at different vertical points along the field of vision.

Balanced Progressive Lenses:

Until now, Nikon lenses have put a priority on acuity to the detriment of eye adaptability. Acuity has to do with how sharp the image appears through the lens. Eye adaptability has to do with how easy it is for the eye to find the correct focal point. The basic issue in lens design is where to place the aberrations that cause distortion and blurriness. Should the lens aberrations be located at the periphery of the eye or spread over the entire lens.

Camera lenses are constructed of multiple glass elements, each of which makes a correction to compensate for shortcomings in others. The problem is create compensatory surfaces in a single element lens. New Nikon lenses use the inner surface of the lens to create compensatory optical agents.

Nikon “Presio Power” lenses, the next generation of progressive lenses, have been able to better balance the factors of visual acuity and adaptability. The lenses have an expanded field of view at the center of the lens near the pupil. An aberration filter creates an ideal focal point. This filtering effect is achieved by making a distorted surface inside the lens. A reverse-progressive surface that is directly opposite the progressive surface is placed inside the lens. Using compensatory surfaces, the lens is able to eliminate all lens aberrations in the final image that reaches the eye.

With these new Presio Power capabilities, it is possible to accept orders for custom-made lenses and design each lens individually. The number of possible patterns to incorporate near-sightedness and far-sidedness can be as high as on billion combinations. Nikon uses a high-speed optical design engine to simulate and design a combination of lens components that is individually suited for each pair of eyes. The system can create a balance between factors of visual acuity and eye adaptability which was nearly impossible before.

Nano Particle Coatings:

Using a state-of-the art ArF excimer laser, Nikon has developed a technology to form a lens coating with an extremely low refractive index and greatly improved the ability of lens to reduce reflections that hit the lens at an angle. This “Nano Particle Coating” is built of particles sized under 10 nanometers (about as big as the diameter of a human DNA strand) or about 40 times smaller than the shortest wavelength of visible light.

Use of Titanium Frames:

Nikon glasses are largely made from titanium (which they call “Dura-Titanium”), a metallic element, one of the strongest, lightest and most flexible materials. Titanium is widely acknowledged as the best material for eyeglass frames because they are virtually impact proof and do not require the careful handling that most eyeglass frames demand.
