Military Ballistic Proof

What is MIL-PRF-32432? Military Ballistic Eyewear Standard Explained

MIL-PRF-32432 is the U.S. military specification for ballistic-rated eyewear. It sets a higher standard than ANSI Z87.1 for impact resistance, ensuring protection against battlefield-level projectile threats.

This specification replaced the older MIL-PRF-31013 standard and is used across all U.S. military branches.

What Does MIL-PRF-32432 Test For?

Eyewear must pass ballistic fragmentation tests to meet MIL-PRF-32432 standards. The testing simulates high-speed shrapnel and debris.

Key Testing Requirements:

  1. Projectile: .15 caliber, 5.8 grain T37-shaped projectile
  2. Speed: Impact at 660 ft/s (201 m/s)
  3. Lens Integrity: No penetration or fracture allowed
  4. Frame Retention: The Frame must remain intact without dislodging the lens

This is 4 to 7 times the impact energy of ANSI Z87.1 high-mass tests.

How to Tell If Your Glasses Meet MIL-PRF-32432

  1. Look for Markings:
    • Lenses may be marked with “APEL” or “Ballistic Rated.”
    • Some glasses list the MIL-PRF-32432 spec on packaging or user instructions.
    • Wiley X, Oakley SI, and other tactical brands will clearly state military rating.
  2. Check the Manufacturer:
    • Not all eyewear that looks tactical is military-approved
    • Only specific models submitted and tested to MIL-PRF-32432 count
  3. Compared to ANSI:
    • All MIL-PRF-32432 eyewear will also meet or exceed ANSI Z87.1+ standards, but not all ANSI Z87+ glasses meet MIL-PRF-32432.

Who Needs MIL-PRF-32432 Eyewear?

  • Military service members (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard)
  • Law enforcement and tactical units
  • Private contractors in war zones
  • Shooting sports enthusiasts seeking maximum protection
