The Advantages of Trivex Lenses

If you wear glasses in your day-to-day life, you undoubtedly want to make sure that you are wearing the most functional and comfortable glasses. This is true whether you are simply behind a desk all day or you are constantly on the go with your family. Simply put, it is worth taking the time to understand your options and alternatives so that you can make the best possible choice. Discover more about trivex lenses:

One of the choices that you must make centers on the type of lenses that you use in your glasses. This is not an insignificant choice. In fact, it is a large choice and one that will significantly impact the protection and clarity of your glasses. If you select the wrong lenses, you may find yourself getting increasingly uncomfortable throughout your day, whether that is due to being unable to see clearly or by your lenses causing your glasses to fall down your nose. By contrast, a pair of high-quality lenses let you see clearly, feel comfortable, and act confident throughout your day.

This is clearly a big decision. That said, you may be asking yourself: which type of lenses should I select? While the decision is ultimately yours, we recommend that you check out trivex lenses. These lenses can offer a number of advantages over other lens types. Ultimately, they can offer you protection, clarity, and comfort—all within the same lens.

At Rx-Safety, we are proud to offer a wide variety of glasses, safety glasses, and accessories to our customers. Our catalog includes name brand trivex lenses. By learning more about trivex lenses and how they compare to the alternatives, you may want to seriously consider these lenses for your next (or even current) pair of glasses.

Trivex Lenses: The Basics

That said, we are going to take one step back here. Before discussing some of the key advantages of trivex lenses, it is important to first explain what trivex lenses actually are.

Trivex lenses actually trace their roots back to the military. Specifically, they are made of material that is used in military helicopter windshields and fighter jet canopies. Because of this, you can imagine that trivex lenses are extremely impact-resistant and lightweight.

Specifically, trivex is a urethane-based pre-polymer. It is called trivex because its original developer (PPG Industries) saw three main properties in this lens. Those three properties are great optics, lightweight, and strength. All three of these properties combined make trivex lenses an excellent choice—regardless of your habits, hobbies, or day-to-day behaviors.

The transition from military use to consumer use is relatively recent. That said, many consumers find that trivex lenses check off all of the boxes in terms of a high-quality, durable lens that provides terrific clarity.

Trivex Lenses: Some Key Advantages

Now, let’s talk about some of the advantages that trivex lenses have over other alternatives. One of the most significant advantages is that trivex lenses are simply more comfortable than other plastic lens materials. Trivex lenses, with a 1.53 index, are thinner than regular plastic lenses. The material that comprises Trivex lenses is lighter than, say, polycarbonate lenses. In fact, the lenses are some of the most lightweight eyeglass lenses on the market today. All of this means that you will not feel the sheer weight of your lenses as you go about your day. Along with this, taking advantage of lightweight lenses avoids the common problem of having your glasses slide down the bridge of your nose.

Beyond the sheer comfort of trivex lenses, another key benefit is the fact that trivex lenses are more impact-resistant than their plastic counterparts. In fact, trivex lenses exceed the FDA’s minimum impact standard for street and dress eyewear by nearly 60 times.

What does this mean for you?

Ultimately, the lenses provide better protection if you are searching for certain types of glasses. For instance, if you need safety glasses for your current or new job, you may want to consider purchasing these lenses. If you enjoy outdoor sports like cycling, hiking, or tennis, trivex lenses can withstand the shock of intense physical activity. Because of this, if you foresee yourself being in challenging or physically intense situations throughout your day, the impact-resistant nature may be appealing to you. Along with impact resistance, these lenses provide 100 percent protection from ultraviolet rays so you can be confident that your eyes are being protected on bright, sunny days.

Trivex lenses also offer more optical clarity compared to their plastic alternatives. By optical clarity, we simply mean how well you can actually see with these lenses. According to PPG Industries, the creator of these lenses, these lenses offer sharper optics because of how these lenses are actually manufactured. Trivex are formed through a cast molding process. Compared to an injection molded process (which is the case for polycarbonate lenses), trivex lenses undergo a slower molding process that is hardened in heated ovens. The end result of all of this? Lenses that have sharper optics compared to other plastic lenses.

In addition to trivex lenses’ cast molding process, these lenses are better at preventing chromatic aberration. Essentially, chromatic aberration is a failure of a lens to focus all colors to the same point. Along with this, an Abbe value is a measure of how likely white light disperses into its colors as it passes through lenses. Lenses with high Abbe values cause less chromatic aberration than those with low Abbe values. Once again, trivex lenses have a significant advantage here, as they contain higher Abbe values than polycarbonate and plastic lenses.

Finally, on the optical clarity point, these lenses have high tensile strength. This essentially means that trivex, compared to some alternatives, are less likely to crack when they are mounted into minimalist-design rimless frames. This is just one less worry that you will need to have if you choose these lenses over other types of lenses.

An Excellent Choice

These are just some of the key advantages of these lenses over other types of lenses on the marketplace. Trivex lenses, like everything, aren’t perfect. Critics argue that one of the key flaws of these lenses are their cost. Generally speaking, they tend to cost more than standard plastic lenses or polycarbonate lenses.

That said, by choosing trivex, you certainly get what you pay for. Trivex can provide you with safety, reliability, and comfort that is essentially unrivaled. There’s no need to second guess whether your lenses are providing the best clarity or are the most durable. In all likelihood, these lenses are the best choice for you. While they may be an investment, these lenses are an investment that will inevitably pay off.

How about measuring the glass focal point from lens to eye? How can you do that without seeing me and trying on the glasses

    • SanMartin says:

      Hi Richard,

There is existing equipment to get the measurement that the glasses have.
