Protects against liquid splash and droplets
Chemical handling, labs
Protects against large dust particles (≥150 microns)
Woodworking, construction
Protects against fine dust particles (<150 microns)
Cement, grinding, pharma
These ratings apply to safety glasses with a foam or rubber seal or safety goggles used in hazardous environments.
Look for the markings on the frame or lens. A proper D-rated safety glass will be stamped with ANSI Z87 plus the relevant D rating(s). For example:

Your eyewear is not rated for those hazards if you don’t see D3, D4, or D5 listed.
Chemical handling, medical labs, wastewater, food processing
Carpentry, farming, landscaping, packaging
Mining, metal grinding, silica dust environments, powder handling
