No one likes fogged-up glasses, but they’re downright dangerous in many industrial environments. When workers can’t see what they’re doing, or when they feel tempted to remove their personal protective gear to get a better look, the risk of serious injury and death goes up. Most workers who need to wear eye protection in industrial situations are affected. Lens fog occurs any time moist air condenses on the lens, and two major risk factors are temperature changes and a hot, humid environment.
The only solution is reliable anti-fog protection on your eyewear, but different types of coating work better in different environments, and not all anti-fog protection products provide the durability you need in work settings. In this article, you’ll learn the difference between hydrophilic and hydrophobic coatings, which is best for industrial environments, and how you can get anti-fog protection that lasts from RX-Safety.
Both hydrophobic and hydrophilic anti-fog technologies help you see through your lenses, but they do so in very different ways. The choice between the two depends on the protection you need for the task at hand.
Hydrophilic coatings attract water. No surprise, since the word “hydrophilic” comes from Greek roots meaning “water” and “loving.” A hydrophilic lens coating uses a low contact angle to attract water droplets. The low angle also smooths and flattens the droplets, forming a continuous, microscopically thin film of water that coats the lens.
Light can pass through this moisture barrier without scattering, allowing the wearer to have an unobstructed, unfogged view. This makes a hydrophilic coating a good choice for high-heat and high-sweat industrial environments where the main problem is condensation on the lens. However, there’s a limit to the amount of water that a hydrophilic lens coating can handle, so it isn’t a good choice for outdoor activities in the rain or near the water.
The word “hydrophobic” comes from Greek roots meaning “water” and “fearing,” so, as you might expect, a hydrophobic lens coating works by repelling water. It creates a high contact angle between the lens and a water droplet, allowing multiple droplets to form a larger bead of water that rolls off the lens. It’s similar to how rain reacts when it hits a freshly waxed car or freshly treated deck.
Hydrophobic coatings handle splashes from external sources of water well, making them perfect for boating or working in wet weather. However, the same coating that repels bigger drops of water allows microdroplets to pool on your lens and produce fog, so hydrophobic lenses generally aren’t a great choice if you work on a hot and humid shop floor.
There’s no shortage of aftermarket solutions to the problem of foggy lenses. Anti-fog sprays, drops, and wipes are easy to buy and easy to apply, but they’re hardly a long-term solution. The coatings these products create rub off easily and can wash away with sweat. You may even find yourself needing to reapply these temporary products during your shift.
You can save money, time, and aggravation, as well as improve your safety, by getting your lenses permanently treated. A chemically bonded, factory-applied coating, like RX-Safety anti-fog, is the only way to get true safety eyewear that offers the protection you need.
At RX-Safety, we know that reliable anti-fog safety eyewear is a necessity in many industrial environments, so we don’t simply apply a temporary layer onto your lenses. Instead, we use our state-of-the-art manufacturing lab to apply durable, industry-leading anti-fog coating onto your lenses. We can even apply anti-fog coating to ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses.
We apply our coatings in a clean-room environment, and our advanced technology allows us to chemically adhere the coating inside the lens matrix. Then, we use thermal or UV curing to physically bond the coating, making it resistant to scratches or chemical damage.
Whether you work outdoors, on the shop floor, or at the job site, lens fog isn’t a temporary problem. Your solution shouldn’t be temporary, either. Unlike the protection you get from sprays and wipes, a permanent anti-fog coating from RX-Safety is engineered to survive repeated cleanings, grueling work shifts, and long periods outdoors without losing efficacy.
When clear vision is a matter of on-the-job safety, you need anti-fog protection you can trust. Depending on your needs, both hydrophilic and hydrophobic technologies can be good choices, but, most importantly, you need a professionally bonded, factory-grade anti-fog coating on your lenses.
Don’t let fog compromise your safety on the job. Experience the RX-Safety difference. Explore our collection of premium prescription safety glasses and customize your pair with our industry-leading anti-fog coating today.
