You might consider getting transition lenses but aren’t fully aware of how they darken. We’ll take a look here to answer the question of what transition glasses are and having transition lens glasses could be an optimal choice for you. Keep in mind that you don’t always need to get transition prescription glasses, and you are able to get transition glasses without a prescription also.
These are glasses with special photochromic lenses on them. They function to shift the tint of the lenses from a clear transparent option all the way to dark sunglasses shade. This happens gradually, and there are a few iterations of the tint coloring and how dark they get. They ‘activate’ when they are exposed to sunlight, but more specifically, the sun’s UV rays.
It typically takes around 30 seconds to a minute to fully darken, but it could take several minutes for the lenses to go back to a clear lens state when no longer exposed to the UV rays. In colder temperatures, they tend to get darker and take longer to transition back to lighter shades due to the actual molecules slowing down. Remember that it’s not about the sun’s brightness but the exposure to the UV rays, meaning even on a slightly overcast cold winter day, your transitions will work just fine.
This is a specialized coating on the transition lenses themselves, so make sure to take extra care when cleaning them. Use mild soap or dishwashing detergent and a soft cloth for the lenses. Using paper towels even could be too abrasive and start to scratch the lenses, let alone the coating.
