There are so many different types of options when choosing the shape of eyeglasses. You want to pick eyeglasses for the shape of face structures to ensure they complement each other. Eyewear that looks good comes from being able to accentuate features and typically comes as the opposite of your face shape. For example, you wouldn’t get round eyewear if you have a round face.

How to start understanding the shape of your face

Look at your current facial features. For example, are your cheekbones easy to see, or is there a softer look? Is your forehead narrow? Or do you have a big and wide forehead? Then look at your jaw and see if it’s curved or sharp. These are the features you want to look at to get your face shape on top of the frame color and the glasses’ purpose.

What are the different types of frames out there?

Round-shaped frames – Perfect for those with sharp features, such as a square or triangular-shaped face, as they help soften their overall look.

Square-shaped frames – Square frames work quite well for those with sharp angles, such as triangular or perfectly round faces. With a round face, they bring in the necessary angles to offset the curves of the face.

Rectangular-shaped frames – Another great option for round faces for the same reason, as it brings those sharp edges will help to bring out the necessary definition. Those with a heart shape due to the rounded cheeks could also benefit from rectangular-shaped frames. Again, these are great as prescription glasses.

Oval-shaped frames – Here, we head towards faces with strong features, such as square or heart-shaped faces, and can benefit from softer frames that an oval shape represents.

Aviator frames – A classic choice for the shape of sunglasses. Aviators work on practically all face types except for heart-shaped faces. These are also an excellent option for prescription sunglasses.

Cat-eye frames – When it comes to eyeglasses for shape-of-face needs, the cat-eye is an excellent option for many face types. This includes the sharp features of a triangular or square-faced shape and the unique features that come with a heart-shaped face.

Goggles – Goggles are a specialized type of frame typically come in a more rounded design. That means these are best suited to be with angular-shaped faces such as a square or triangular shape. But, again – depending on the overall purpose of the frames, it may be more about practicality than style.

Fitover frames – Fitover frames tend to be big and will come in a rectangular or wraparound style. That means they will look best on those with a heart-shaped or round face. However, keep in mind that it can work with any face type with a fit over frame, as it’s meant to be used with the most common-sized prescription glasses.

You might have noticed we haven’t mentioned anything about an oval-faced shape. That’s because any style of framework will suffice when it comes to that shape. So whether you’re looking for prescription glasses or sunglasses, it doesn’t matter if you go for a rounded or sharper frame; Oval-shaped faces have the most options.
