Transition lenses are often praised as the ultimate in convenience and versatility when it comes to eyewear. But here’s a question many people ask: Do Transition lenses stop working after a while?
Here’s the thing: Transition lenses are made to handle daily use and work well for a long time, usually as long as you have your glasses or even longer. But just like anything else, they might start showing signs of wear after a while. So, let’s delve deeper into the nuances of Transition lens longevity.
While it’s often reported that Transition lenses tend to lose their effectiveness after approximately three years, there’s more to this narrative than meets the eye. Yes, some users may notice a subtle yellowish tinge in the lenses when they’re in their clear state, accompanied by a slight reduction in darkness under direct sunlight. But before you bid adieu to your trusty Transition lenses, consider these crucial factors:
1. Time Isn’t the Only Factor:
While three years is a commonly cited timeframe for Transition lens wear, it’s essential to recognize that various factors can influence their performance. Temperature fluctuations, for instance, play a significant role in how quickly Transition lenses adapt. During hot summer months, expect a slower transition and less darkening compared to cooler seasons.
2. Behind the Wheel Woes:
Contrary to popular belief, Transition lenses don’t undergo the same color transformation behind the wheel of your car. The UV-blocking windshield inhibits the activation of the photochromic properties, leaving your lenses unchanged.
3. Shedding Light on Darkness:
It’s crucial to manage expectations regarding the darkness achieved by Transition lenses. While they offer adequate protection against sunlight, they may not reach the same level of tinting as dedicated sunglasses. Understanding this distinction can prevent disappointment and ensure realistic usage scenarios.

Hi Mechele Nordyke,
Cleaning transition glasses is quite straightforward. Here’s a simple and effective method. Rinse transition lenses under lukewarm water, then apply a small amount of eyeglass-formulated mild dish soap or lens cleaner to each lens. Gently rub the lenses in a circular motion with your fingertips to remove dirt or grime. Rinse thoroughly under lukewarm water to remove any soap residue. Gently shake off excess water and dry carefully with a clean, lint-free microfiber cloth.
I’ve had my transition glasses for a few years now, & there is a yellowish tint to them when they transition to clear & they don’t turn dark as fast as to when I first got them .is there any solution to remove that yellow tint from them or anything I can do for them to turn darker faster
What is the best way to clean transition glasses? Thank You 😊

Are there different degrees of shading for transition lenses
Hi Geoffrey,
There’s a slight shading difference between regular transition lenses and Xtractive ones.
My only last two years now they’re just flat no colour at all.
